A Southern oasis is blooming in downtown LA: Bill Addison Reviews Joyce FOR LA TIMES

One doesn’t much see perloo on restaurant menus, particularly in Los Angeles, but chef Sammy Monsour has built a career employing his North Carolina roots as a worldview and springboard. At Joyce, the restaurant he opened with three partners last August in downtown Los Angeles, he dials back the porcine goodness and assembles his loose, layered interpretation of the dish around seafood.

EATER LA’s 38 Essential Restaurants:
JOYCE MAKES THE LIST April 2024

The brightest new star in Downtown’s dining scene is Joyce, a Southern restaurant with chef Sammy Monsour at the helm. Vibrant crowds gather around the dining room to revel in good vibes and over dishes like crawfish hushpuppies and chilled seafood platters. Every meal ought to begin with at least a half dozen wonderfully bright and meaty oysters from Murder Point, Alabama when they’re available. It’s the perfect start paired with one of the bar’s zero-waste cocktails by beverage director and co-owner Kassady Wiggins.

THE MICHELIN GUIDE: BIB GOURMAND

Michelin announces the Bib Gourmand establishments for the inaugural MICHELIN Guide California selection. From tacos to sushi, and bistros to oyster bars, the highly-anticipated list features a grand total of 151 restaurants representing 36 different cuisines. Michelin inspectors take great pride in finding hidden gems to complete the selection that are more widely accessible for diners, whatever their budget or craving.

Why You Should Care Where Your Seafood Comes From, according to 3 chefs

Monsour’s work is tightly bound to his belief in mindfulness. “Food is life and death. Food is everything. Food is culture. Food is celebration. Food is emotion. Food is medicine,” he says. Chefs have the ability to influence how people eat, he explains; “We can contribute by sourcing sustainable seafood and using our menus as a platform to inspire our crew, community and country to take action.”

CHEF SAMMY MONSOUR RETURNS TO L.A. WITH JOYCE

Chef Sammy Monsour and Kassady Wiggins, the couple behind the former Preux & Proper in DTLA, have teamed up with co-owners Prince and Athena Riley to open Joyce, a modern coastal restaurant bringing reimagined Southern cuisine to South Park. And it’s just a short walk from their old stomping grounds.

Why Los Angeles Fell Head Over Heels for the Fried Chicken Sandwich

Monsour, the Carolina chef behind Preux Proper, serves eight towering varieties with Southern city themes. So the Austin is topped with red bean hummus and tortilla chips, while the Miami is brushed with jerk spice and lemongrass rémoulade. Should he decide, someday, to construct one as a love letter to L.A., there will certainly be no shortage of inspiration.

Screen rant: 10 Most Memorable Chefs On Guy's Grocery Games

Monsour is among the previous winners of Guy’s Grocery Games who’s competed on the show multiple times. At one point, he even took home the grand prize of $20,000. Perhaps, what many may be unaware of is that Monsour also previously appeared in an episode of Diner’s Drive-ins and Dives when the show made its way to Boston. Meanwhile, this celebrity chef has also participated in Cutthroat Kitchen and most recently, Beat Bobby Flay. Today, you can catch this Michelin award-winning chef at his restaurant.
