Op-Ed | Sustainable Aquaculture Investment in the U.S. (James Beard Foundation)
In collaboration with the Coalition for Sustainable Aquaculture (CSA) and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), I contributed to an op-ed published on the James Beard Foundation website arguing that it’s time for the U.S. to invest in sustainable offshore aquaculture. The full article lays out a vision for a science-based, environmentally responsible seafood system built in American waters — one that can help stabilize supply, support coastal economies, and offer consumers ethically farmed seafood.
The U.S. currently imports the vast majority of its seafood, often from countries with weak environmental or labor protections, which undermines traceability, food security, and sustainability. By responsibly investing in offshore aquaculture, we can reduce dependence on imports, protect ocean ecosystems, and build a resilient, climate-smart seafood system that serves both people and planet.
Chefs are uniquely positioned to lead this change — we bridge kitchen, plate, community, and policy. With culinary influence, public reach, and on-the-ground experience sourcing seafood, chefs can advocate for better regulation, transparency, and sustainable seafood practices.
I believe this is a critical juncture for U.S. seafood policy. If we commit to sustainable aquaculture now, we have the opportunity to shape an ethical, future-facing food system.
